"MediaTalk" host Mike Reynolds is joined by Gary Zenkel, president of NBC Olympics to discuss his outlook for this year's Winter Games. NBC anticipates strong audience interest, robust advertiser participation, and a Peacock experience that converts Olympic demand into sustained streaming usage. The network says Olympic ad inventory was sold out about a month before opening day, reinforcing the Games’ status as a scarce, brand-safe property and extending the momentum NBC saw in Paris. Operationally, Zenkel describes a large-scale, efficiency-driven production model that blends on-site coverage in Italy with expanded remote production from Stamford, Connecticut. The approach reflects pandemic-era acceleration of technology-enabled workflows, designed to control costs while still delivering comprehensive coverage across platforms. Peacock is positioned as the centerpiece of the consumer experience and the growth engine for streaming engagement. NBCUniversal plans to offer the broadest access through Peacock — live events, replays, sport deep dives, and curated viewing options — while using NBC’s prime-time show as a story-forward package that drives mass reach and daily buzz. Zenkel notes that total distribution across streaming and linear will exceed 3,000 hours, underscoring Peacock’s role in delivering breadth and personalization. Welcome to "MediaTalk," a podcast hosted by S&P Global. Our news and research staff explore issues in the ever-evolving media landscape. Today we're joined by Gary Zenkel, President of NBC Olympics, and we're going to talk about the Winter Games from Milan and Cortina, Italy. Gary oversees NBC's Olympic business, working closely with the IOC, the USOC and NBC's distribution partners and affiliates to enhance coverage, distribution and marketing. How are we doing today, Gary? Gary Zenkel: I'm doing great. Mike Reynolds: We did this before the Paris Games. How many times have you been over to Italy and you're decamping? For real. When? Gary Zenkel: I've probably been there about ten times in connection with this project, and I will leave for Milan this coming Tuesday. Mike Reynolds: And you'll be there through the end then? Gary Zenkel: I will be there through the end. Mike Reynolds: Alright. Milan-Cortina will mark the first time the Winter Games will be fully on the ground with fans and spectators since Sochi back in 2014. Does that make a difference in coverage? Will it make a difference in viewership? Gary Zenkel: Absolutely. The one quick correction: there were fans on the ground in PyeongChang 2018. Mike Reynolds: Okay. Gary Zenkel: But yes, 2022, which was during a very restrictive COVID period for China, left most of those winter venues more or less empty of fans. Viewers were watching premier exciting sports events and wanted to share those moments with fans rooting for their favorite teams, countries and athletes. That takes a little bit of the feel and the emotion away from the experience of watching the Olympics. As we saw in Paris, where the fans returned to the venues, among many other reasons, that was why we saw such a resurgence in viewership, interest and excitement around those games. And we expect Milan-Cortina will be the same. Mike Reynolds: Okay. From an ad perspective you sold out the Winter Games a month before the opening ceremony, which is February 6th. Greater interest in the Games, given the success in Paris. You also have two other big events in February: Super Bowl LVIII and the NBA All-Star Game. Gary Zenkel: Yeah, I think, Mike, there's always been a tremendous amount of interest in the marketplace. The Olympics have been a sought-after property for brands, certainly in this country and probably around the world. I do think we had that window of time during COVID where the environmental factors at play caused some brands to look very carefully and question some of their investments around sports events. Again, back to the prior question, which didn't have the benefit of full stadiums, Paris was a great Games for us. Most of the brands that had previously been investing in our coverage came out, and then we had many more advertisers, and that continues to grow. One thing we have seen is that there are more advertisers in our coverage for these Games and Paris, and that seems to be the trend we saw in prior Games. Mike Reynolds: Okay. Gary Zenkel: So it's a great sign and a great acknowledgement of the enormous value of the Olympics and the uniqueness of that opportunity for brands to circulate their messaging with really inspiring, very reliable content. Mike Reynolds: You guys have said it's a record sales performance for the Winter Games. Gary, are you guys making money on Milan-Cortina? Gary Zenkel: I'm not going to answer that; I'll leave it to others. Mike Reynolds: Okay. Gary Zenkel: But again, we're really excited going into these Games for the reasons I mentioned before, and we are very happy that we remain the home of the Olympics in the United States for at least another decade. Mike Reynolds: Okay. You've been doing a lot more production from your facilities up in Stanford. Gary, can you give us some sense of how many people NBCU will have over in Italy and how many will be working on it back in Connecticut? Gary Zenkel: Sure. We'll have about a thousand NBC-credentialed staff in Italy, across essentially three different clusters: Milan, Cortina, and Livigno. Stanford will have about 2,000. This was a move that began a while ago but accelerated during COVID, especially the last Winter Games in 2022 when the restrictions were so strong that it would have been very difficult to move our normal numbers in there, including equipment and other things. We really accelerated what was inevitable: the more and more remote production, because of the efficiencies and the availability of all the technology we have. It's a natural progression that got accelerated, and now we're really comfortable that we have every inch of the Olympics in Italy covered—talent, cameras, etc.—and the best possible working technological facility with all the tools we need to deliver the best possible coverage across the platforms we deliver on. Mike Reynolds: At your press event back at 30 Rock on January 7th, there was a lot of talk about America sending its best team for a non-U.S.–based Olympics. Gary, who should we be looking out for? And two-time gold-medalist Chloe Kim, the skateboarder. Gary Zenkel: I'm not going to give you an injury report, but we believe she is going to get herself prepared and hopefully in shape to compete. Certainly from what we hear, that's her intention. She's an incredible U.S. Olympian going for her third gold in the women's halfpipe, and we're excited about her. Also, the Lindsey Vonn story is like no other. One of the great skiers of all time, an Olympic medalist with huge success on the World Cup circuit, retired after a bunch of injuries, had her knee essentially reconstructed, and after an eight-year absence she's going to give it another try. If you asked us a year ago, we would have said we were hoping she makes it. Having her on the team in Italy would be fantastic. Right now she's, on paper, the best women’s down-hiller in the world. Mike Reynolds: Okay. Gary Zenkel: She's been on two podiums in three tries and she's skiing incredibly well. So that's an exciting story. You also have Mikaela Shiffrin, the most decorated World Cup skier—male or female—who's coming back and wants to get back on the podium. She's skiing incredibly this year, with five out of six slalom wins. And then you have Ilia Malinin, the quad-jump figure skater. This is the “quad god” on the ice—doing things that nobody on the planet can do. We're extremely excited about him. You also have three women on the women's figure-skating side who all have a chance to get on the podium. Not sure we'll have all three, but boy, would that be spectacular. You’ve got Jordan Stolz, a long-track speed skater who was very young in the last Olympics—somewhat of a Michael Phelps-ish story when he came out in his first Olympics, little known but showing signs of being very special. He's the world champion for the last two years in several different race lengths and probably the fastest skater right now in long-track across three different disciplines. And then I don't want to miss the return of NHL excitement around the U.S. hockey team and the U.S.–Canada rivalry, both male and female. We saw the excitement in the Nations Cup last year; Boston got a little spicy. Imagine that could happen again on the ice side if they meet. There will obviously be a tremendous amount of excitement. One last one: Jesse Diggins, a cross-country skier. The U.S. isn’t historically known for that, but she could come out of Milan and is competing in several different races as the winningest, most decorated U.S. female Winter Olympian of all time. She's an incredible athlete with an incredible story. Mike Reynolds: Okay. A lot of success last time, so you're replicating, for the most part, your programming game plan: live coverage six hours, as was the case from Paris, six-hour difference to the East Coast, live events during the day, then curated highlight film and interviews late at night. Mike Tico, the host, is a busy guy. Anything you're looking to do differently or better this time around, Gary? Gary Zenkel: I think, Mike, we're advancing that playbook that Molly Solomon, our executive producer, brought to the Paris Olympics. There are definitely some things you will see—new technology in our storytelling and coverage, new applications on Peacock where, of course, the entire Olympics will be available. You'll see some new faces in front of the camera in Italy. But more or less it is that playbook: everything live, the best sports live, the best stories on NBC and the cable channels, and of course everything on Peacock. And yes, primetime is the mini-series. The Olympics, with the greatest stories of the day that Molly and her team put into a really tight, compelling, three-hour show you can't miss a minute of. Mike Reynolds: Okay. Stanley Tucci and that guy named Snoop are also going to be on the ground. What's going on with them? Gary Zenkel: Yes, we have Snoop, the “ambassador of happiness,” the honorary coach of the U.S. Olympic team. He just fell in love with the Olympics and adds a lot of texture to our coverage, excitement and entertainment. There's a very robust plan for Snoop on the ground for the entire Games. And Stanley Tucci, another terrific addition to the coverage, is connected to Italy—food, culture, wine and just Italy. I think he will bring to life, in a way perhaps we haven't been able to do before, a great Italian storyteller to our audience and to our coverage. That will be a valuable addition. Mike Reynolds: Gary, you alluded to Peacock. I guess, as was the case in Paris, every hour all the events, the medal stands, all the rest of that. Altogether, you guys—how many hours of coverage are we having from the Winter Games? The most ever, I believe. Gary Zenkel: Yeah, between Peacock and all the linear hours, we're over 3,000 hours of coverage. Mike Reynolds: A lot of work. Yeah. In terms of Peacock, expecting a lot of sign-ups to watch the Games. Do you have any special promotions you can talk about to get people to watch and then become paid subscribers? Gary Zenkel: I think, Mike, and this has been the case—especially after we saw it in Paris—that America wants to watch the Olympics. Peacock has certainly the deepest, most versatile coverage because it puts in the hands of the user the opportunity to move around as they choose—whether it's to watch the NBC coverage, or some of the special coverage available on Peacock, like the Gold Zone, or to just go deep into a sport. If you want to watch five hours of curling in a row, that's available to you, or you can pick up what you might've missed through a replay or highlight. So we continue to advance the experience, the availability of content, and the discoverability of content. And the product continues to advance as well. There will be some new features available to the Olympic viewer on Peacock. I won't describe them all here, Mike, but the most optimized, compelling opportunity to watch the Olympics in the United States will be on Peacock. Mike Reynolds: As we look ahead, also part of the coverage, USA and CNBC USA's Team USA are in place for these Games. When we get to LA in 2028, it's a much bigger event. Will they be in the mix again? Will there be other former NBCU cable networks involved, now that the company’s been spun out? Gary Zenkel: At this point, Mike, we are very focused on Milan. We have done some thinking on LA, but it’s more on the operational side. So we’ll turn our attention to LA in 50 or 60 days, which of course we’re all excited about, but at this point I can’t project exactly how we will program those Olympics. Mike Reynolds: Okay. Alright. Obviously you’ll be busy working when you’re not. Are there some events you want to go and check out personally? Gary Zenkel: There are definitely some events I want to check out. Personally, I don’t do a lot of that, but if the opportunity presents itself, I’d love to sneak out for the U.S.–Canada hockey final. Mike Reynolds: Okay. Gary Zenkel: By the way, I have a little story. I did that in Vancouver, and if you remember, it was an unbelievable game. It went to overtime, and the Canadians won on a Crosby goal. I snuck out, and about five minutes into the game I got a call from my former boss, Dick Ebersol, asking, “Where are you?” In any event, I ended up back in the IBC watching the game in the control room with about 50 people. It was probably just as good as being at the stadium. It was so exciting. If that happens again, we certainly have our fingers crossed. Mike Reynolds: Last one, Gary. Your expectations from the Winter Games in Milan and Cortina? Gary Zenkel: We're going to have a great Winter Olympics. The American audience is going to fall in love with this team if they haven't already. They're going to be dazzled by what they see on the screen, whether it's in Italy, in Milan, or the Dolomites up in Cortina and Livigno. They're going to experience the joy that the Olympics so reliably deliver. And the team here, led again by Molly, has a fantastic plan to bring to life the greatest, deepest stories, incredible coverage of the sports competition, and the spirit and good feeling that we all get from sitting down for a couple of weeks and watching the world come together. Mike Reynolds: Alright, we'll all be watching and streaming. I wanted to say thanks to NBC Olympics President Gary Zenkel for taking the time to give us a preview of the Winter Games from Milan, Cortina, Italy. Gary, thanks for being with us. Gary Zenkel: Thank you, Mike. Mike Reynolds: Alright, and thanks to all of you for listening. This is Mike Reynolds. We'll catch up soon on the next installment of "MediaTalk."
